Why silence can matter as much as an alert.

A source that stops reporting looks identical to a source reporting that nothing is wrong. Operationally, they are opposites.

Absence reads as reassurance

Dashboards are built around arriving information. When a feed fails, the last known value usually stays on screen, quietly ageing, and is read as current. The failure mode is not a wrong number; it is a stale number that looks fine.

Three different silences

A source can be delayed, broken, or genuinely reporting nothing. Each demands a different response, and only the third is reassuring. Treating them as one state is how a monitoring gap becomes an assumption of normality.

Making silence visible

Track arrival separately from content. Give every source an expected reporting rhythm, and surface the deviation as an operational fact in its own right — a blind spot, not a technical footnote in an integrations screen.
